Day 1 Leg 3 - Figure 8 ATL

If you went through Grand Rapids, the ride up 37 starts the two-lane experience for the trip.  37 can take you north all the way to route 55, or you can cut across towards Manistee on some side roads.  The entire area is blanketed by state forest, and the route passes through many small towns.  There are also plenty of roadside tables if you need a rest.

If you take highway 31 North, you may want to stop at the Great Lakes Naval and Memorial Museum. Otherwise, you'll keep heading north on 31 until you hit Manistee.

At Manistee, you'll turn right onto route 31 North for just a few miles. There will be a left turn off for route 22.  This is where the road begins to get fun and the scenery kicks itself up a notch.  Much of the road traces the inlets and bays of the Lake Michigan shoreline.  The road will take you through a few small harbor towns and continue up the coastline providing both great views and a nice winding road to follow.

A few miles after the town of Arcadia is a scenic overlook, and the spot for one of the many traditions of this trip - the Pretty Maids all in a Row picture. From the roadside picnic tables, the view of Lake Michigan is spectacular, and even better, a wooden staircase will carry you high above the Lake Michigan shoreline bringing you incredible views of the coastline and the road just traveled.  Remember to park your bikes in a line so that the many versions of the Pretty Maids picture can be taken.
