Day 1 Leg 4 - Figure 8 ATL

After a quick glimpse of the beauty of Lake Michigan that you were treated to during the end of leg 3, you will be overrun by incredible scenery for the rest of the day.  The road continues tracing the shoreline, and for those wishing for a few twists and turns, your wish shall be granted.  The miles outside of Frankfort are only the beginning.

After the town of Empire, the road will fork.  Veer left and continue on route 109 North.  Along this short jaunt up to Glen Haven are many attractions.  The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a 7 mile loop offering spectacular views of the countryside, the dunes, and Lake Michigan.  There is an incredible place to watch the sunset from this drive if interested. There is a $5.00 fee for the drive, but it's well worth it.  A little farther up the road is the Sleeping Bear Dunes area.  For those interesting in doing a little climbing, here's your spot.  Continuing North, you will hit an intersection and 109 will continue to the right.  Go straight through this intersection towards the water for another of the trip traditions - the shoreline near Glen Haven.  A more beautiful and clean shoreline you will not find.

Continuing north out of Glen Arbor, you'll get more of the same.  The road twists it's way up towards Leland with plenty of stopping places and side roads for the adventuresome traveler.  Further north still is the Northpoint Lighthouse Park.  Pay your admission fee, and you'll enjoy a stroll down a rocky shoreline as the afternoon sun glistens off the lake.

If you haven't had enough yet, you're in luck, as the ride down 22 towards Traverse City continues to impress with it's views of Grand Traverse Bay. For those interested in watching the sunset, it's only about 25 minutes back to the scenic loop from Traverse City.  For others, there is plenty of food and drink awaiting us at the hotel.
